It has been just over four years since I opened my Etsy shop. In that time there have been many changes. When my shop first opened everything was crochet, it was all made from someone else’s pattern, and everything was theme based (i.e. animals, cartoon characters). Since then I have learned to create my own outfits without using a pattern, I have taught myself to knit, and I have sold 250+ items on Etsy alone.
I have decided at this point to start writing out my patterns and selling them along with my outfits! To reflect this change I have also changed my shop name to better portrait what I am offering. Welcome to Tiny Props and Patterns – I hope you find something you like.
Along with props and for sale patterns I want to share content on my blog here. To celebrate new photos I received with my Mickey Mouse inspired outfit I will share not only the photos with you but also the patterns.
The hat in this photo is from Sarah over at repeatcrafterme found here. Sarah’s blog was what got me into newborn crochet. I had just crocheted my very first hat for my boyfriend when my mom shared Sarah’s blog with me. I fell in love with her puppy hat and couldn’t stop making all of her patterns after that.
The diaper cover and baby booties can also be found on her page as well. I hope you enjoy these patterns. Subscribe to my blog (and Sarah’s as well) for more!
With how busy I was for Halloween I am shocked at how slow things have been for Christmas in my Etsy shop. Are people more interested in non-seasonal newborn items? Is the market over saturated with similar items? Is my style not what people are looking for? My shop was taken over by red outfits and wintery accesories, yet I am still selling more Mermaid Outfits than anything else (not complaining)!
To my own fault I was not prepared for the post-Thanksgiving shopping and did not offer any special sales. However, I now know what I can to do improve during the upcoming year.
These two outfits are new to the shop this year:
I have made a conscious attempt to create one boy outfit for every girl outfit I make. I tend to make baby girl outfits MUCH more than baby boy outfits (they’re just so cute!). Now, I am trying to make twin sets so I will definitely have more boy outfits as well as appeal to mothers expecting multiples.
I have so many ideas for this upcoming year and have identified some areas for growth. I would love to hear back from my readers about their thoughts or own experiences with online businesses.
I know that almost every crochet shop out there has a mermaid outfit, but I just LOVE the idea and this it is one of my favorite newborn outfits so I had to create my own. When I first started crocheting I had just vacationed in Hawaii and was considering doing some travel nursing there. I thought this would be the perfect outfit to sell to the locals while there. While I took a job in Texas instead I still wanted to follow through with this outfit.
I purchased a mermaid pattern from Crochet My Love. While I probably could have created my own pattern from start to finish, I purchased this pattern to help me with sizing. With over 23,000 sales I figure Crochet My Love knows a thing or two about sizing.
While sitting poolside at a Maui resort I figured, what better topic to post than the mermaid outfit that I was inspired to make during my first visit to Hawaii?!
This is my first mermaid outfit although I’m sure there will be plenty more to come! I had the pleasure of making this outfit for my childhood best friend’s beautiful newborn baby girl. I absolutely love the photos she took with it!
