Learning to Crochet

I think my mom taught me how to crochet when I was about three. I remember watching her crochet and make beautiful things and wishing I could make things with her. She was sweet enough to teach me the basics at that age and I remember making chain after chain. 🙂 Eventually I she taught me to double crochet, so my chains turned into blankets or scarves (or unfinished items). My crocheting skills never evolved from row after row of double crochet until recently. As mentioned in the previous post, I needed to make a hat for my boyfriend. At that point my curiosity was spiked and I wanted to learn more about the craft.

I had seen the cutest little puppy dog hat that my mom had made so I asked her where she found the pattern. This is what really opened up the flood gates. I headed over to Sarah’s website at Repeat Crafter Me and found some of the cutest patterns. So I made a puppy and a few owls and then wanted more… My coworker was about to have a baby so I got to work on the bunny hat and diaper cover and am so excited to see the newborn pictures they will be taking this weekend. Once I made the bunny I thought, little baby chicks would be cute for this time of year as well, so I took what I had learned from making the hats using Sarah’s technique and added my own touches here and there to make a handful of my own items.

Already knowing the basics (chain, single crochet, double crochet) made it pretty easy to learn how to crochet more intricate things. If ever in doubt I have found Google to be very helpful in finding tutorials or instructions on a stitch. I even found a great tutorial on how to make a “Magic Ring”, which I now use whenever I’m working in rounds.

I’ve already received my first custom order request (from my sister of course) so I am working on a Batman hat and an Elmo hat.

New items on Etsy this week include:

New to Etsy

My boyfriend has been asking my to crochet him a beanie for the past year or so. I kept putting it off, not being able to find the right pattern or yarn… I finally gave in about a month ago and made him a simple beanie from some leftover acrylic yarn and a pattern I found online. It was a simple design, but he was happy enough to finally have a hat. A couple weeks later (in the middle of our cross country move) he found some really soft yarn that I had and asked me to make another hat for him out of that. Since then I have gone crazy (I think I may actually be insane) over crocheting and have been scouring the web for different patterns to try. I am officially obsessed and my boyfriend is overwhelmed by the stack of newborn baby hats that are accumulating in our house. My solution? Sell them. New to the area I would love to get out into the community and find a weekend market or something to sell them at, but for now I’ve listed the items on Etsy.

I would like to use this blog as a place to communicate with others in the craft and blogging world. I plan on periodically posting my new creations and am hoping to be inspired by and learn from other crafters. If you would like to custom order one of my items, just message me what you’re looking for and I will be in touch with you about pricing, shipping, etc. Or head to my Etsy account at http://www.etsy.com/shop/YarnOverByAshley. Feel free to leave a comment about your favorite pattern or stitch, or give me feedback about my posts.

Thanks for stopping by!
